Arístides Esteban Hernández Guerrero (ARES.)

Born in Havana, September 2, 1963 he studied medicine (graduated at 1987) and psychiatry (graduated at 1993). Self made cartoonist, illustrator and painter.

His first cartoon was publishing in 1984, in Opina magazine. His works has been publishing all around the world and he worked as illustrator (mainly children books) and made oil paintings and animations.

He works in Havana as a freelance artist. He has participated in a great number of humour events, where he has obtained more then one hundred international awards. Some of them are:

  • Excellence Award Yomiuri (Japan)
  • Grand Prix Eduardo Abela, San Antonio de los Baños Biennial (Cuba, 1997, 2001, 2005)

  • Grand Prix 'The peace messenger' (Serbia)
  • First Prize Editorial cartoon competition (Canada)
  • Grand Prix Tehran Biennial (Iran)


Ares has published sixteen books:

He has illustrated another sixty books. Ares has worked with TV and animated films, some of his works has been use to make short animation films (Filminutos).

He has given lectures about cartoon and comics art in Cuba, Iran, México, Colombia, Turkey, Canada, Spain, Venezuela and Finland. He served as a jury in a number of international cartoon contest in Mexico, Italy, Brazil, Cuba, Iran, Turkey...

In 1994 he was nominated by the Witty World Magazine (USA) to be included in the list of the best cartoonists of the world, he was nominated by Cuba to the Quevedos Iberoamerican Cartoon Award, was included in the Memory Project Book as one of the most relevant visual artists of Cuba in the XX Century and included in the survey The Twenty Most Outstanding Cartoonists of the Twenty Century in Cuba. In 2002 he received the National Culture Medal by the Cuban Culture Ministry.
